MONOTYPES
If
you are unfamiliar with monotypes, they are a unique blend of painting
and printmaking. My approach is to take a metal plate, cover it competely
with thick black printing ink, and then, using brushes, paper towels,
and turpentine, paint in a subtractive way, removing the ink. It could
be compared to painting in negative. Once you have an image you are
happy with, you wet a good sheet of paper and lay it on top of the plate.
You then roll them through the press, peel the paper off the plate,
and hope to god it looks good. You only get one print, and sometimes
half the fun is waiting to see what the image will look like on paper.
The monotypes below were done in the winter of 2000 on George Pratt's
press. Some are available for sale. Please email me for pricing information.
